WOMCOM Joins Athens Music Week 2024

Athens Music Week (AMW) 2024 is set to return from May 22 to May 25, transforming the Technopolis City of Athens and key concert venues across the city into a hub for music industry professionals, artists, and enthusiasts. This four-day celebration will feature discussions, presentations, workshops, interactive experiences, parties, and a diverse lineup of showcase performances from both domestic and international artists.

Among the esteemed participants of this year’s event is Women Power in Comics (WOMCOM), a pioneering platform dedicated to amplifying the voices of female comic artists and illustrators across the Balkans and Europe. WOMCOM serves as a movement that not only showcases artistic talent but also actively challenges and redefines gender narratives within the comic industry.

A collaborative initiative involving partners from Serbia, Hungary, Slovenia, Greece, Croatia, and Montenegro, WOMCOM is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Commission. The two-year program (2023-2024) aims to foster collaboration, engagement, and empowerment of female comic artists through residencies, exhibitions, and conferences.

May 24 | 12:15 – 14:00 | Innovathens – Antonis Oikonomou Lab Women Power in Comics (WOMCOM) Meeting This session will introduce the WOMCOM initiative, highlighting its mission and ongoing efforts to empower female comic artists while addressing gender issues in comics. Participants will engage in discussions on the intersection of art, gender, and creative expression.

May 24 | 14:00 – 14:30 | Innovathens Groundfloor Reception by Women Power in Comics (WOMCOM) An opportunity for attendees to network with WOMCOM representatives, partners, and artists in an informal setting. This gathering aims to strengthen collaborations and foster meaningful connections within the creative community.

May 24 | 18:00 – 18:30 | Purifier Basement Women Power in Comics (WOMCOM) Exhibition WOMCOM will present a traveling exhibition featuring works created during residencies in Serbia and Hungary. Under the mentorship of renowned female comic artists, contributors from multiple Balkan countries have developed comics exploring gender-related themes. This exhibition will showcase the creative outputs of talented artists, providing insight into contemporary gender discourse within the comic art sphere.

May 25 | 14:30 – 18:15 | Purifier Basement Creative Hackathon: Where Music Meets Art – Powered by WOMCOM The inaugural Creative Hackathon at Athens Music Week, powered by WOMCOM, will bring together 18 young visual artists from the Balkans, musicians, and music professionals to collaboratively design album covers or tour posters. Guided by expert mentors, participants will showcase their final creations to industry leaders. This initiative underscores WOMCOM’s commitment to gender inclusivity and the empowerment of female voices in the arts.
