Digital Homeland Awareness in the Small Western Cyclades
A community of people who love Kythnos, research, write, narrate, and photographically immortalize its place.
A collaborative way of promoting place and destination.
The Municipality of Kythnos, in collaboration with PostScriptum and specialized partners, activated the local and online community of WikiKythnos contributors, creating open and accessible digital content about the island for the global community. In the project “Open Digital Homeland Awareness for a ‘smart’ and ‘open’ Kythnos,” a community of people who love Kythnos, through research, photographic documentation, and writing, composed narratives that highlighted this small western Cycladic island as a place and destination.
Through a series of thematic collaborative actions and educational workshops using the world’s largest digital library, Wikipedia, PostScriptum and the Municipality of Kythnos contributed to the enhancement of open knowledge and digital skills, as well as the development of smart destinations.
Within the framework of WikiKythnos, field visits were made to the island of Kythnos with specialists who spoke about its history, cultural heritage, folklore, natural landscape, and traditional gastronomy, with the belief that knowledge is a social good. Additionally, through strategic partnerships, efforts were made to raise environmental awareness among the island’s residents, focusing on the flora and fauna of Kythnos and particularly on the protected areas that fall under the Natura 2000 network.
An active community was created around the action, proposing topics and corresponding entries about the island. Existing and new entries were processed regarding landmarks, monuments, historical events and figures, folklore, and environmental elements related to Kythnos.
The action “Open Digital Homeland Awareness for a ‘smart’ and ‘open’ Kythnos” is part of the Local Development Strategy CLLD-LEADER / Local Action Group “Development Company of Cyclades S.A.” / European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development: Europe invests in rural areas / Ministry of Rural Development and Food / Rural Development Program of Greece 2014-2020. It was implemented with the co-financing of Greece and the European Union.
