Digital Transformation and Highlighting the Cultural Repository of the Athens School of Fine Arts, 1837-2021. A Collection of Works depicting the Artistic Evolution and Reflection of the Historical Journey of Modern Greek Art
The artistic production of the Athens School of Fine Arts – the oldest educational institution in Greece for the visual arts – has been digitized, documented, and presented digitally, shaping a modern repository of works of all expressive categories with selected paintings and photographs, sculptures, prints, installations, video art, etc. created by ASFA students from 1837 to 2021. Additionally, a series of digital interactive and educational applications inspired by the history and work of ASFA were developed, aiming to highlight its rich artistic production and, more broadly, its contribution to the field of visual arts and contemporary culture.
The digitization and documentation of the archive, as well as the design and development of the applications, were carried out by PostScriptum. For the hosting and management of the digitized collection, the MuseumPlus collection management system was used, following international documentation standards, compatible with the treasures of the National Documentation Center and Europeana. Moreover, specialized researchers, museum professionals, art historians, and cultural managers shaped narratives and presentations of the archival material, while at the same time, IT professionals and developers developed flexible and user-friendly digital applications, harmonized with the modern cultural and digital landscape.
Among other things, a 360° virtual tour application was created for exhibitions, exhibition facilities, the historic building complex, and the artistic annexes of ASFA, the digital interpretive exhibition – interactive documentary “Who is Who,” and the application “VR exhibition development in virtual worlds.”
The project “Digital Transformation and Highlighting the Cultural Repository of ASFA, 1837-2021. A Collection of Works depicting the Artistic Evolution and Reflection of the Historical Journey of Modern Greek Art” was implemented through the Operational Program “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship & Innovation” (EPAnEK) 2014-2020, co-funded by Greece and the European Union (European Regional Development Fund – ERDF).
