The Archive of the Athens & Epidaurus Festival: An invaluable digital collection of 65 years – Development, organization, documentation, management, and promotion of digital content of the Athens & Epidaurus Festival (1955-2020)

The Athens Epidaurus Festival presents to the public a comprehensive picture of its historical journey, productions, and overall impact on the performing arts and Greek culture.

A focal point of the project is the documentation of the printed and audiovisual archive of the Festival by a ten-member scientific team from the University of Peloponnese according to international standards, compatible with the treasures of the National Documentation Center and Europeana. Over 500 performances, 1.500 documents, 45.000 images, 1.300 videos, and 1,500 entries in the categories of Organization/Format-Creators-Performers-Production-Coproduction are showcased digitally for the first time in the form of a “virtual museum” through the internationally recognized MuseumPlus platform, allowing visitors to explore in real-time the identity of each event and information about the artistic productions, publications, and collaborations that took place within them.

Moreover, by leveraging the capabilities of new technologies, a series of digital applications inspired by the historical and cultural journey of the Festival were developed. Virtual tours of its venues, interactive timelines, virtual exhibitions, and educational games offer multiple opportunities and various ways of interaction with the public, enhancing its outreach and connection with diverse audiences from Greece and abroad.

The implementation of the project on behalf of the Greek Festival S.A. was undertaken by ViLabs under the consulting guidance of PostScriptum.
